The SSC photo size, without the confusion
Filling an SSC CGL or CHSL form? Here is the exact specification SSC publishes — short numbers, no confusion:
- Photograph: 200 × 230 pixels, file size 20 KB to 100 KB, JPG format
- Signature: 140 × 60 pixels, 10–20 KB
Short numbers. And yet SSC season produces the same panic every single year, because the photo sitting in your phone matches none of them.
One thing that has changed: the photo is captured live
The photograph is captured live inside the form in the current SSC application system — with your webcam or phone camera, right there in the browser. You don’t upload a photo file at all. So prepare for that moment instead: sit in good light against a plain background, face the camera squarely. And keep a spec-ready 200 × 230 px photo on your phone anyway — for your own records, for state and other portals that still take an upload, and so you know exactly what “right” looks like. The file you still prepare and upload yourself is the signature — 140 × 60 pixels, 10–20 KB — and that is where the resizer earns its keep.
Where candidates go wrong with SSC uploads
Over-compressing. This one surprises people. Worried about the 100 KB ceiling, someone crushes a file down to 11 or 12 KB — and SSC has a floor as well as a ceiling. Below 20 KB, a file is too small and equally unacceptable. Aim for the middle of the range, somewhere around 40–70 KB, and you are safely away from both edges.
The studio photo from two sessions ago. SSC applications are strict about the photograph being recent and recognisable — it is matched against you later in the process. A photo from your first year of college, however smart it looks, is a risk. A fresh photo taken against a plain, light wall at home genuinely works better.
The signature on the wrong paper. Sign on a clean, plain white sheet — no ruled lines running through your name. Use a black or blue pen, sign the way you normally sign (not in all capital letters, which applications routinely flag), and photograph it straight from above in daylight. Slanted, shadowy signature photos — the kind you get from a rushed scan at a crowded shop — are the ones that fail.
Leaving it to the last evening. SSC servers crawl on the final day. If an upload fails at 11 pm, you have no evening left to fix it. Prepare both files a day early, keep them in a separate folder on your phone, and the form itself becomes a ten-minute job.
How to make the SSC files in one minute
Open the SSC preset on this site. It is already set to 200 × 230 pixels and the 20–100 KB window for the photo, and 140 × 60 pixels at 10–20 KB for the signature, so there is nothing to type or remember. Upload your image, check that your face or signature sits comfortably in the frame, and download. Both files are made inside your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server.
One last habit worth building: after downloading, look at the file details once (any gallery or file manager shows size and dimensions) and compare them with the photo instructions in the current SSC notification. Specifications are occasionally revised between cycles, and the notification is always the final word — not this page, not any page. Twenty seconds. Then submit and forget about it.

What is the photo size for SSC CGL and CHSL?
The published SSC specification is a photograph of 200 × 230 pixels, between 20 KB and 100 KB, in JPG format. One thing to know in current SSC cycles: the photograph itself is captured live inside the application form (the guide above explains it). The 200 × 230 px, 20–100 KB figure is still the size SSC publishes for the photograph — and the size our SSC preset prepares.
What is the signature size for SSC?
Our resizer prepares the signature at 140 × 60 pixels, and the file must be 10–20 KB. SSC itself prescribes the size in KB — about 6 × 2 cm — rather than a pixel size. Sign on plain white paper with a black or blue pen, and keep the image clean and straight.
My photo is only 15 KB. Will SSC accept it?
No — 15 KB is below the 20 KB minimum in the published specification. And yes, a file really can be rejected for being too small, not only for being too large. Resize it into the 20–100 KB range and you’re fine.
Can I use a selfie as my SSC photo?
It can work — if it’s clear, front-facing and taken against a plain background. But a photo taken by someone else, or on a timer, usually frames your face better. No filters, no caps, no sunglasses, and keep it recent.
