What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
JEE Main (by NTA) is the national entrance for B.Tech admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and it is also the screening test for JEE Advanced — only the top-qualifying JEE Main candidates can sit for Advanced. JEE Advanced (conducted by one of the IITs each year) decides admission to the IITs themselves. Almost every serious engineering aspirant writes JEE Main; Advanced is the second, harder stage for IIT seats.
What is GATE used for?
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a postgraduate-level exam. Its score is used for M.Tech and PhD admissions at IITs, NITs and other institutes — often with a monthly scholarship — and many public sector undertakings (PSUs) also use GATE scores to shortlist engineering graduates for jobs. Final-year engineering students and graduates can appear for it.
I am in Class 12. Which engineering entrance exams can I apply for?
The main ones are JEE Main (for NITs, IIITs and as the JEE Advanced qualifier), your state CET (such as MHT CET, KCET, WBJEE, AP EAPCET, TG EAPCET (Telangana) or KEAM) for state-quota seats, and the private university entrances — BITSAT (BITS Pilani), VITEEE (VIT) and SRMJEEE (SRM) — plus COMEDK for private colleges in Karnataka.
