JEE Advanced 2027

● 2027 — TO BE ANNOUNCED ORGANISED BY AN IIT EACH YEAR

Last updated — Oct 2026 · checked against the official Joint Admission Board (the IITs) notification

JEE Advanced is the entrance test for B.Tech admission to the 23 IITs. It is conducted by one IIT each year under the Joint Admission Board — IIT Roorkee organised the 2026 cycle (exam 17 May 2026). You cannot apply directly: you must first be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in JEE Main Paper 1. No organising IIT, brochure or date for JEE (Advanced) 2027 had been announced on jeeadv.ac.in as of 23 Oct 2026, so the details below are from the official 2026 Information Brochure, labelled as the previous cycle.

JEE Advanced Eligibility

The five criteria (A1–A5) of the 2026 brochure — a candidate must satisfy all of them. Years will shift for 2027.

Criterion A1 is the gateway: you must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in JEE Main Paper 1 of that year. Foreign National and OCI/PIO (F) candidates are the exception — they register directly without JEE Main.

You also need: birth on or after 1 October 2001 (1 October 1996 for SC, ST and PwD) for the 2026 cycle; a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years; your first Class 12 appearance in 2025 or 2026; and no earlier admission to an IIT. The 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or top-20-percentile Class 12 rule is a condition for IIT admission, not for appearing in the exam.

  • Top 2,50,000 in JEE Main Paper 1 — mandatory for Indian candidates
  • Maximum 2 attempts, in 2 consecutive years
  • First Class 12 appearance in the exam year or the year before
  • Not admitted to an IIT earlier (with the brochure's stated exceptions)
  • No domicile requirement

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

Two compulsory computer-based papers on one day, each with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The brochure does not fix the question count in advance — the table shows the actual 2026 papers.

PaperQuestions (2026)Marks (2026)
Paper 1 — per subject (16 questions)48 total60 per subject · 180 total
Paper 2 — per subject (18 questions)54 total60 per subject · 180 total
Both papers together102360

Only candidates who appear in both papers are ranked. The exact marking scheme is printed in each paper's instructions — in 2026, single-correct MCQs were +3/−1, one-or-more-correct MCQs carried partial marks with −1 otherwise, and numerical questions had no negative marking.

JEE Advanced — Frequently Asked Questions

Who organised JEE Advanced 2026, and who will organise 2027?

IIT Roorkee organised 2026, under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). The 2027 organising IIT is To be announced — jeeadv.ac.in still showed only the 2026 cycle on 23 Oct 2026.

Can I appear in JEE Advanced without JEE Main?

Indian nationals (and OCI/PIO (I)) cannot — they must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in JEE Main Paper 1. Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates register directly and are not required to write JEE Main.

How many attempts do I get in JEE Advanced?

A maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years, and your first Class 12 appearance must be in the exam year or the year before it (2025 or 2026 for the 2026 cycle).

What is the age limit for JEE Advanced?

For 2026: born on or after 1 October 2001 (on or after 1 October 1996 for SC, ST and PwD candidates).

Is 75% in Class 12 needed to appear in JEE Advanced?

No — the 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or top-20-percentile rule is a condition for admission to the IITs, not for appearing in JEE Advanced.

What was the JEE Advanced registration fee?

At Indian centres in 2026: ₹1,600 for female (all categories), SC, ST and PwD candidates, and ₹3,200 for all other Indian-national candidates. The fee was non-refundable and registration was incomplete until it was paid.

Are both papers compulsory, and is there negative marking?

Yes, both Paper 1 and Paper 2 (3 hours each, CBT, English/Hindi) are compulsory, and only candidates appearing in both are ranked. The brochure says negative marks may be awarded for incorrect answers to some questions; the exact scheme is printed in each paper's instructions.
